Havana and La Fortuna named as destinations on the rise

Havana and La Fortuna named as destinations on the rise
27 Dec 2013

Havana has been named the Traveler's Choice top Destination on the Rise in the world.

TripAdvisor, which compiled the top ten, said the Cuban capital 'has been experiencing a cultural renaissance'.

Visitors can explore the city's UNESCO World Heritage centre, admire the colourful colonial architecture and party on down in a salsa club.

Second on the list was a Costa Rican destination that itself has plenty to offer the holidaymaker, La Fortuna. Situated in the shadow of the spectacular Arenal volcano, the scenery surrounding this small town a few hours' drive from the capital, San Jose, is stunning and the list of activities practically endless.

Here's just a few of the things you can expect to enjoy on a visit:

Hot springs

One of the most indulgent experiences you can have on a visit to La Fortuna is a day at the hot springs, relaxing in the warm volcanic waters. Many spas have sprung up in the area, turning the natural volcanic springs into bathing features, accompanied by massage parlours and swimming pools.

Horse riding

A totally organic way to experience the beauty of the lush volcanic scenery is to take a gentle horse ride across the slopes.

Bird watching

One of Costa Rica's biggest draws is it incredible bio diversity, with hundreds upon hundreds of bird species to be spotted. During a trip through the forest look out for keel-billed toucans, hummingbirds and the blue-grey tanager.

Lava walks

Volcan Arenal is an active volcano, putting on nightly lava shows until a few years ago. It has erupted in spectacular style in the past and you can walk across the hardened black lava flows on its slopes.

Climb a volcano

Although Arenal is far too dangerous to climb, the nearby dormant Cerro Chato can be climbed by fit visitors able to deal with the heat and humidity. Their reward at the top is the sight of a beautiful crater lake hidden among the foliage. ADNFCR-408-ID-801676465-ADNFCR
