Best short-haul destinations to celebrate New Year's Eve
30 Dec 2013

Although the big moment is just 36 hours away, if you're quick, there's still time to catch a cheap flight to a short-haul European destination to celebrate New Year's Eve differently in 2013.

With no time for you to research where to go, we've instead compiled a list of the top places to party on 31 December in Europe, starting with one of the most popular among Brits:

Amsterdam

One in five New Year's Eve jetsetters makes tracks across the Channel to Holland, according to new research from Only-apartments, so why not join the party?

Many of them have got their sights set on attending the sold out Awakenings New Year's Eve Special in Amsterdam - a 12-hour techno marathon held on 1 January - but there's also plenty to do on the 31st itself, including enjoying the city's official celebrations in the Oosterdok area.

Fly from London to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport from £193 return, departing on 31 December and returning on New Year's Day. The flight time is just one hour, so you won't miss a second of the action.

Berlin

If you'd like some company on New Year's Eve, why not join 1m other revellers at the Brandenburg Gate in historic Berlin for one of Europe's biggest open-air parties?

With multiple stages, party tents, food stalls and light shows, all extending for more than a mile, as well as a huge fireworks display at the stroke of midnight, you're sure to have a great night. Best of all, unlike all those expensive pubs and clubs back home, admission is free.

Direct flights to Berlin Schonefeld Airport from London cost from £247 return and the flight time is around the two-hour mark.

Funchal

Madeira might be a small island, but it holds the Guinness World Record for the biggest-ever fireworks display held on 31 December 2006. Another compelling reason to visit is that temperatures will be around 10C when the clock strikes midnight and up to 17C during the day.

Reach the island in 3h 45 from London for just under £400. ADNFCR-408-ID-801676867-ADNFCR
