Heathrow to consult on runway options

Heathrow to consult on runway options
3 Jan 2014

Heathrow Airport has said it will consult members of the local community on which of the two options for expansion that were shortlisted by the Airports Commission they prefer.

They will be asked to choose between Heathrow Airport Holdings' proposal for a third runway and Heathrow Hub's idea to extend the two existing runways and then split them in two.

The con of the former is that it would expose new communities to noise, while the latter would offer less respite to those already affected.

'We believe this principle [of runway alternation and respite] remains important for local communities and we plan on asking people for their views early in 2014,' Heathrow Airport Holdings told the Financial Times.

Two other options were also shortlisted by the Airports Commission last month: a new runway at Gatwick and a new hub on the Isle of Grain, although it said that it needed more time to investigate the viability of 'Boris Island'. ADNFCR-408-ID-801678393-ADNFCR
