Plenty of reasons to visit Alaska in 2014
8 Jan 2014

After visitor numbers to Alaska grew by 7% in the summer 2013, there are plenty more reasons to experience the USA's least populated state in 2014.

From new activities to exciting festivities, the 49th state has much to offer those who venture there.

Wildlife spotting is one of the main reasons to visit Alaska, which is home to magnificent creatures such as bears and eagles. There's also plenty going on in the water, with cetacean lovers now able to take full-day whale watching tours on the pristine waters of the Inside Passage with Alaska Charters & Adventures.

Intrepid travellers can also take to the air for a helicopter 'City of Lights' tour above Anchorage and the Chugach Mountains with Tanalian Aviation.

There are plenty of new ways to get active in Alaska too, with Denali Zipline Tours opening a new 80-acre park at Seward featuring adrenaline-pumping zip wiring, while Winterlake Lodge is offering three new outdoor excursions this winter: backcountry skiing; overnight snowmobiling; and glamping.

There will also be a number of festivities taking place in 2014. Highlights include the fifth Alaska Bear Festival being held in Wrangell in July; the 50th Anniversary of the USA’s biggest ever earthquake on Good Friday 1964; and Celebration, a biennial native culture festival featuring colourful processions, dance performances, authentic arts and crafts, workshops and lectures.

Despite all these great activities and events, Alaska's tranquility remains its biggest draw. Being the largest yet least populous state, and boasting the largest area of national parkland in the USA, Alaska's unspoilt natural beauty is a rare treat on our crowded planet.

To reach this wild and remote state, travellers can catch a cheap flight to the contiguous USA, before joining a connecting flight into one of Alaska's international airports, such as Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau. Although it will take the best part of a day to get there, it's well worth it for the total escapism you can enjoy there.ADNFCR-408-ID-801680036-ADNFCR
