Italy unveils packed cultural calendar
9 Jan 2014

If you consider yourself something of a culture vulture, you should definitely think about booking flights to Italy this year after the European country unveiled an extensive programme of events, from art exhibitions to festivals.

The country is already well-regarded as a bastion of culture, with cities such as Rome boasting stunning architecture, galleries and museums, but 2014's cracking events should boost its standing even further.

Art exhibitions

Among the highlights of Italy's arts calendar this year are an incredible display of Renoir's masterpieces at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Turin featuring 60 works including the iconic 1919 piece 'The Bathers'.

Home grown talents are also being celebrated, with Palazzo Venezia in Rome putting on a display of paintings by Carlo Saraceni, known as Il Veneziano. This gives visitors a rare chance to learn about this unheralded but skillful disciple of Caravaggio.

Next year marks 100 years since the outbreak of World War I and the tragic events of 1914 to 1918 are being remembered at a number of museums across Italy, which was one of the many countries involved in the conflict.

In the city of Rovereto, the Museo della Guerra has opened a new installation dedicated to World War One and to the Italian-Austrian War 1915-1918. On show will be documents - including the one issued by King Vittorio Emanuele III to declare war in Italy - military uniforms, remembrance monuments and other important war relics.

Bringing lovers of culture together is Italy does exceptionally well, with its world-renowned festivals drawing in people from across the globe.

Established events putting on a show in 2014 include the 71st Venice Film Festival; the 60th Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago;  the 101st International Opera Festival in Verona; and the 18th edition of the Festival of Literature in Mantova.

On top of all these cultural extravaganzas, Italy will also be playing host to world-class sporting spectacles such as the Giro d'Italia, the Six Nations and the Rome Marathon. ADNFCR-408-ID-801680407-ADNFCR
