Global hotel brands eyeing up Africa

Global hotel brands eyeing up Africa
10 Jan 2014

Starwood is among the major hotel brands preparing to make a move in sub-Saharan Africa.

Now that Starwood, Marriott, Hilton and InterContinental have established themselves in the Middle East, Africa is the next continent in their sights.

Marriott, the USA's largest hotel chain, got things rolling last November, by taking over 116 hotels run by Cape Town-based Protea Hospitality Holdings to more than double the number of rooms it offers in Africa.

'Honestly, I think Africa is the next big thing,' Michael Wale, head of Europe, Africa and Middle East at Starwood told the Financial Times.

However, he added that it won't be an overnight transition: 'I'm absolutely clear it won't be easy and won't be done in the short term.'

As well as a growing number of tourists - international arrivals passed the 50m mark for the first time in 2012 - business travellers will also be a key demographic for Starwood and the rest in Africa, where the economy is growing at almost the same rate as China and India. ADNFCR-408-ID-801681138-ADNFCR
