New research shows that the number of people wearing ski helmets on winter sports holidays has surged in recent years.

According to a poll of more than 1,000 skiers and snowboarders conducted by Telegraph Travel, 71% of people now wear a lid on the slopes, compared to just 39% when the same survey was carried out in 2009.

This matches figures gathered from surveys in both the USA and Switzerland, showing that the culture on the slopes is changing.

Much of this is being attributed to recent incidents involving celebrities, such as Michael Schumacher's near-fatal off-piste crash in December, when his head hit a rock. Doctors said that if he hadn't been wearing a helmet he would have died.

The figures have been welcomed by ABTA - The Travel Association, which said that young people are leading the way when it comes to wearing a helmet on the slopes.ADNFCR-408-ID-801692942-ADNFCR
