Heathrow-Luxor flight relaunched

Heathrow-Luxor flight relaunched
17 Feb 2014

Passengers can now book flights from London Heathrow to Luxor after EgyptAir reinstated its service.

Egypt's national carrier will fly once per week to the historic city, with prices starting from £350 return for the five-and-a-half hour journey.

Passengers will get a two-item baggage allowance and a hot meal on the Boeing 737 plane, offering 24 business and 120 economy seats.

The airline said it is responding to 'a significant increase in demand by tourists' for alternative entry points to Egypt, besides the capital Cairo.

'Reinstating the direct flight to Luxor makes perfect sense given the demand from the UK for cultural, historical and adventure-based holidays and experiences,' commented Omayma El Husseini, director for UK and Ireland.

'The direct Luxor service demonstrates that British holidaymakers have a resilient passion and desire for all that Egypt has to offer.'

Luxor is a prime destination for tourists of all nationalities, not just Brits, who flock to enjoy 'the world's greatest open-air museum'. There are numerous historic sights worth seeing, including:

The Valley of the Kings

Although there are more than 60 tombs hidden in the Valley of the Kings, the one most people come to see is the legendary tomb of Tutankhamun - the discovery of which in 1922 by the British Egyptologist Howard Carter remains one of the most famous archaeological finds in history.

Karnak Temple Complex

Across the other side of the River Nile, on the east bank, lies another of Luxor's World Heritage Sites, Karnak.

This sprawling complex of crumbling temples and towering columns is the largest ancient religious site in the world and is thought to be second only to the Great Pyramids in terms of visitors per year.

Nile cruises

The attractions in Luxor aren't just land based, with the River Nile offering a chance to take to the water and enjoy the sights from the comfort of a cruise boat.
