Sydney 'needs new airport'

Sydney 'needs new airport'
18 Feb 2014

Sydney will require additional airport capacity in the future in spite of a project to upgrade the existing international facility, a minister has said.

Although the master plan to combine domestic and international operations at Sydney using shared terminals has now been approved by the federal government, infrastructure and regional development minister Warren Truss said this is not enough.

'While the plan sets out to use the airport's limited growth potential to full effect … it is clear the Sydney region will need another major airport to cope with soaring demand,' he told the Sydney Morning Herald.

Despite Sydney Airport saying the changes will help it meet the forecast demand of 74m passengers in 2033, the government is expected to put forward Badgerys Creek as the site of a second Sydney airport later this year.

Sydney is Australia's busiest airport, and currently handles around 36m passengers per year.ADNFCR-408-ID-801694633-ADNFCR
