Greece to host World Travel Awards
21 Feb 2014

Greece is to host the World Travel Awards for the first time, it has been reported, with its capital Athens to be the home of the prestigious event for one weekend this coming August.

The awards, which see industry specialists from airline operators to agencies receive nominations and accolades at an Oscar-style red carpet ceremony, aim to reward the strongest and best performing brands in the travel sector.

President of the World Travel Awards Graham Cooke said the institution is "delighted" that Athens was chosen as a stop-off on the world tour for 2014, which also features Dubai, Ecuador and Anguilla.

"The Greek tourism sector is enjoying a renaissance, with last year’s double-digit growth predicted to continue in 2014 as it continues to grow market share," he said.

"The selection of our hosts is fundamental to the success of our awards programme, and Athens possesses all the ingredients to rise to the challenge of hosting our Europe Gala Ceremony 2014."

Those who receive nominations at the Athens heat will be invited to the Grand Final in December, which has yet to have its location confirmed, where they will come up against a number of other travel brands before winners are chosen for the various categories.

Athens is said to be a good choice for the World Travel Awards thanks to the way it carefully balances a vibrant contemporary culture while at the same time looking after everything that is old and beautiful about the city.

The weekend runs from August 2nd and the formal-dress ceremony will take place on the Saturday at the luxury beach resort of Divani Apollon Palace & Thalasso.

There will be a cocktail reception, a gala dinner and a number of presentations exploring the industry's past, present and future. ADNFCR-408-ID-801696401-ADNFCR
