Tourism integral to Cyprus recovery, says minister

Tourism integral to Cyprus recovery, says minister
26 Feb 2014

Tourism should be at the heart of Cyprus' plans for economic recovery, the country's finance minister has said.

Speaking earlier this week during the 36th annual hotel conference in Nicosia, Harris Georgiades said the industry is a 'crucial structural component' of the Cypriot economy, the Famagusta Gazette reports.

'It is our clear precondition that the effort we have embarked upon during the last few months will continue, with the same momentum, with the same determination,' he said.

'The tourist and hotel industry should be at the very centre of this effort.'

Cyprus got into serious financial difficulties early last year, when the country came close to bankruptcy. At the time, tourists were advised to take plenty of currency with them, as banks were closed to stop locals withdrawing all their savings.

However, the situation has since been stabilised and Cyprus will be hoping to welcome around 1m Brits to its shores in 2014 to match previous years. ADNFCR-408-ID-801697950-ADNFCR
