A new report has underlined the importance of the tourism industry to the global economy, with figures showing that it created as many as 266 million jobs in 2013.

This is, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council, an increase of six million jobs on the year previous.

What’s more, it was noted that the sector's contribution to the total world GDP exceeded the $7 trillion mark.

The figure is up from $6.6 trillion in 2012 and is a reflection of a continuous rise for the fourth consecutive year.

Overall, the number of tourists increased by five per cent, meaning that there were 1.1 billion travellers in 2013.

This comes shortly after it was confirmed that more Europeans than ever booked a cruise holiday in 2013.

Figures show that the number of cruisers from the continent hit the 6.36 million mark, which is equivalent to a four per cent increase since 2012.ADNFCR-408-ID-801705280-ADNFCR
