Philippines makes effort to boost tourism industry
20 Mar 2014

The Philippines government has announced new plans to stimulate the local tourism industry.

Specifically, it has been confirmed that major improvements will be made to a number of the country’s airports.

The overarching ambition behind the move is to ensure that ten million tourists head to the Philippines by 2016.

Reflecting on the planned work, transportation undersecretary Rene Limcaoco said that it will "ease our logistic costs, alleviate our traffic congestion, and support the target of the department of tourism to achieve its ten million tourists for 2016".

The government has previously spoken of its desire to see the tourism industry become one of the key drivers of the domestic economy.

Last year, however, the country attracted 4.7 million foreign tourists, which is 300,000 short of its stated ambition.

But with major infrastructure improvement in the works, this figure is set to climb markedly over the coming years.ADNFCR-408-ID-801705278-ADNFCR
