Washington Monument set to reopen
8 Apr 2014

One of the most famous landmarks in the US is to reopen to the public in the coming weeks, officials in Washington have confirmed.

It has been revealed that the iconic site is to open once more in May, three years after it was badly damaged by an earthquake.

The monument attracts a huge number of tourists every year, but was damaged in 2011 by an earthquake that measured 5.8 in magnitude.

Indeed, as many as 600,000 people went to see the monument on an annual basis and it is thought that the move could lead to a spike in visitor numbers.

Since it was damaged, the monument has undergone repair work that has cost around £9 million and it is now almost completely restored to its former glory.

The monument was first opened to the public 125 years ago and is widely recognised as one of the must-visit attractions in the city.ADNFCR-408-ID-801710946-ADNFCR
