UK visitors support Portugal tourist market

New research has underlined the importance of British tourists to the tourism industry in Portugal.

According to the latest figures, last year saw UK tourists account for as many as seven million overnight stays in the country.

This represents a rise of 8.6 per cent on the previous years. What's more, the study found that visitors from the UK accounted for as many as 1.4 million, up 7.4 per cent on the year before.

And as a result, the British market is the most-important demographic when it comes to main inbound markets.

Filipe Silva, UK director of Turismo de Portugal, predicted that this year will be similarly successful.

"We believe this is due to the diverse product we have on offer, from cities, beaches, golf, nature and culture, to world-renowned gastronomy and wine," he remarked.

"Throughout this year we will continue to work closely with tour operators and travel agents within the industry to promote the country’s latest developments and products, and hopefully in turn, attract more visitors."
