22 May 2014

New figures show that domestic tourism in Saudi Arabia has increased dramatically in recent years.

Indeed, the number of people who have travelled within the state has risen by as much as 25 per cent.

Some 23.8 million did this in 2013, according to the report, which also said that there were only 19 million tourists the year before.

An official from the local tourism authority explained that there were more than 203,000 Saudis working in the tourism sector in 2013, which is equivalent to more than 27 per cent of the total number of Saudis employed in permanent work.

“Tourism is a main creator of jobs and a huge economy booster," the official remarked.

“There are currently more than 1.1 million people employed in this lucrative sector and the number of Saudis employed in tourism and hospitality is expected to exceed the 1.7 million mark by 2020.”ADNFCR-408-ID-801722610-ADNFCR
