Game of Thrones has captured the imaginations of thousands of people from around the world, with the TV series widening the appeal of George RR Martin’s epic series of novels.

Now, the author has revealed that a visit to Hadrian’s Wall back in the 1980s inspired his vision of The Wall that stands at the northernmost border of the Seven Kingdoms.

Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine, he stated that standing on a section of the Roman outpost gave him a ‘very profound feeling’. Martin revealed that he’d tried to imagine what the Roman legionaries must have thought looking out over the wild, hilly landscape to the north.

He pointed out that although we know there were Scots living in the region, the Romans had no idea and, for them, there could have been ‘any kind of monster’ inhabiting this unknown land.

Hadrian’s Wall is a fantastic attraction to visit in Northumberland and is far from the only Roman site worth exploring on a trip to the region. There are also Roman forts, temples and milecastles in the surrounding area, not to mention some excellent museums where you can learn a little more about this fascinating period of history.ADNFCR-408-ID-801725700-ADNFCR
