Aalborg probably isn’t the first place you think of when you’re considering a holiday in Denmark, but it is in fact the country’s fourth-largest city and home to a host of cultural and historical attractions.

The nation’s tourist association has revealed that visitors have reacted positively to the regeneration of Aalborg’s waterfront area, which includes the construction of a new, world-class concert venue - Musikkens Hus.

Other architectural highlights in this part of the city are the striking Utzon Center, which is clad in aluminium, and Nordkraft, which used to be a coal-fired electricity plant.

However, Aalborg isn’t just about the new - there are plenty of attractions harking back to its Viking heritage to be explored as well. For instance, one of the largest Viking burial sites in Scandinavia is located just outside the city. Lindholm Hoje is home to almost 700 graves and the onsite museum displays a varied array of artefacts that have been collected from the area.
