People heading to Toronto, Canada in a few months' time for a winter break will have the chance to find out about 15th century icon Michelangelo Buonarroti if they choose to visit the Art Gallery of Ontario.

The exhibition 'Michelangelo: Quest for Genius' is set to open at the gallery on October 18th, staying in place until January 11th, and will features a range of Michelangelo's drawings.

The main focus will be 30 drawings that he created, which date from prior to and after his work on the Sistine Chapel.

They include drawings done in advance of work on the chapel, such as sketches of the architecture and presentation pictures.

According to the museum, the artist behind the likes of the famed sculpture of David faced a lot of struggle in his career - and some of his particularly ambitious pieces were left unfinished because of the his patrons' changing demands.

The show is to be presented in thematic sections, with drawings grouped based on their link to certain issues to do with genius.

“This exhibition offers a direct and personal encounter with extraordinarily rare works, that almost never travel, by this great artist’s own hands,” commented AGO curator of European art, Lloyd DeWitt.

“We are thrilled and honoured to work with the Casa Buonarroti to bring these precious works on paper to Canada and to tell the real story behind their making, debunking the myth that genius is easy and great work untroubled."

The 30 drawings which are to be the focus of the exhibition come from the collection of the Casa Buonarroti in Florence.

The show is also set to look at how Auguste Rodin, the famed French sculptor, was influenced by Michelangelo, and some Rodin works will be on show at the event.ADNFCR-408-ID-801730694-ADNFCR
