Art-fan tourists heading to Sydney this winter may want to pop to the Art Gallery of New South Wales to take in some pop art.

The gallery is gearing up to present Pop to Popism starting on November 1st and it's billed as Australia's most extensive pop art exhibition yet. The event was recently announced by ministers of the Australian government.

It will include pieces from the 50s and 60s pop art period, as well as the 70s and 80s new wave.

Included in the display will be 'Triple Elvis' by Andy Warhol and 'Look Mickey' by Roy Lichtenstein (a comicbook frame style piece featuring Disney characters Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck). The pieces on show have been sourced from 35 global lenders.

The exhibition is set to spend four months in Sydney, closing on March 1st next year.

"Pop to popism is among the most expansive and ambitious exhibitions ever undertaken by the Gallery," commented the director of Art Gallery NSW, Dr Michael Brand.

It's set to take over a whole floor and present more than 200 works by a range of 70 different artists, he explained.

"This will be the most comprehensive survey of pop art to be seen in Australia and reflects the decisive role played by pop in the development of contemporary art,’ he also said.

The event will showcase pop artists from Australia beside global peers he said, as well as extending "beyond the period of classic pop art into the eighties, giving audiences an insight into pop’s enduring legacy both here and abroad."

The show forms one element of the 2014-15 Sydney International Art Series.

Art Gallery NSW can be found on Art Gallery Road in Sydney. A popular tourist destination, the city is of course home to the architecturally stunning Opera House, which hosts a wide range of events to suit all tastes, as well as a host of other exciting things to see!ADNFCR-408-ID-801730668-ADNFCR
