Latino exhibition planned for Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery

Latino exhibition planned for Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery
2 Jul 2014

August sees the opening of a new show dedicated to six Latino American artists at The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, USA.

It forms part of the gallery's continuing Portraiture Now series, looking at contemporary artists exploring new approaches to figuration.

'Portraiture Now: Staging the Self' is said to include works by creators who explore the ways that people negotiate and construct identities using portraits.

There are going to be 59 works on show, among them paintings, photos and portraits in mixed media.

It is set to run for eight months, between August 22nd this year and April 12th next year.

The National Portrait Gallery aims to explore American history via portraits of people from actors to presidents.

You can visit the gallery for free and it's open between 11.30am and 7pm every day.

National Portrait Gallery director Kim Sajet has said of the Portraiture Now series that it "showcases contemporary artists who are breaking the conventions of portraiture."

"In ‘Staging the Self,’ these artists show complex contemporary identities unfolding between themselves and their subjects. They are both within and between American and Latino cultures," Sajet added.

Meanwhile, people who head to the museum in the coming few days will be able to see a portrait of 'Roar' songstress Katy Perry called Cupcake Katy, painted by Will Cotton. It's current stint on display ends July 6th.

“Will Cotton’s tongue-in-cheek portrait of Katy as a ‘cupcake’ brings to mind a traditional European portrait of a bewitching 18th-century belle," Kim Sajet has commented.

Perry's hits include Part of Me and Dark Horse, and she is currently undertaking a world tour having recently released her latest LP, Prism, which came out last year.

The album was the follow up to her last full length effort, Teenage Dream, which spawned successful singles such as Firework and The One that Got Away. ADNFCR-408-ID-801732748-ADNFCR
