Half 'save for airport spending'

Half 'save for airport spending'
16 Jul 2014

More than half of people - 52 per cent - save spending for a trip to the airport, recent Gatwick Airport research shows.

Among this proportion, 19 per cent plan a perfume purchase, 14 per cent will purchase clothes and accessories and 29 per cent will eat or drink before they head to the skies.

Meanwhile, 21 per cent of people indulge in airport shopping for the VAT-free prices, 22 per cent say there's no better way to use the time while they wait to fly and 26 per cent say that shopping is a central part of the experience to be had at an airport.

Indeed, eight per cent said they've had to run to catch the plane because they were having such a good airport shopping trip!

The survey, which ICM carried out using a survey of 2,000 consumers from the UK, also looked at excuses shoppers have wheeled out as a way of justifying spending.

The top two, both of which had been used by 48 per cent of people, were the fact something was part of a sale or discounted, or that it was simply sold at a bargain price.

Meanwhile, 30 per cent had bought something with the reasoning that it would be a treat that would cheer them up.

The research was linked to Tempted before Take-off, a summer retail campaign that the airport has launched.

It put a figure of £82.80 on the 'tipping point' at which people think they should have an excuse for a spend.

"Being tempted to shop is clearly something people feel the need to justify but if the purchase and price is right, we shouldn’t have to make excuses. That’s why, with up to 20% off high street prices on almost everything at the airport, it’s not surprising so many plan to spend before they take off," commented Gatwick head of retail, Spencer Sheen.

He said the airport has put millions of pounds into making the shopping and dinning experience of visitors better, so they can all find the things they want and need with speed and ease, at an optimum price.

The UK offers a wide range of airports for those planning to travel by air, including Manchester Airport, Heathrow, Edinburgh and many more.

Heathrow recently had its new Terminal 2: The Queen's Terminal opened by HM Elizabeth II.ADNFCR-408-ID-801735770-ADNFCR
