Wade Marynowsky exhibition planned for Melbourne
13 Aug 2014

An exhibition called Nostalgia for Obsolete Futures is set to come to the National Gallery of Victoria Studio in Melbourne later this month.

Showcasing the work of Dr Wade Marynowsky, this will be kicking off at the Federation Square venue on August 22nd, with a run that ends October 19th.

Organisers promise that the event is set to feature the likes of performance art, video and sound elements, and that Marynowsky makes pieces that combine a surprising mix of camp and humour.

"The exhibition will include a range of experimental and emerging art forms including The Hosts; four programmed robots which will roam around the foyer of NGV Australia and the Studio, interacting with visitors through sound and movement to create an uncanny and unique experience," said Tony Ellwood, the director of NGV. Visitors can see the Hosts in the foyer of the NGV Australia starting September 6th this year.

Mr Ellwood has also explained that the artist has made several new pieces for the show. Stairway to Heaven is among them. This is a piece of performance art using the NGV Australia's grand staircase, he said.

Several musical instruments were sent down their staircase, and recorded while they were falling, he explained.

"It is the latest in a series of video and sound works where Marynowsky has combined his interest in experimental music and autonomous improvisation," according to Ellwood.

Another piece on show, Fish and Chips, is described as "a robotic video work" and features seagulls flying and looking for chips to devour. Black Casino in another of the works featured, and shows five guitars on a rotating wheel which can be spun to make 'Diablous in Musica'.

An event on September 6th will see Wade Marynowsky giving a public appearance linked to the exhibition - one of various events tied in with the show that have been planned.ADNFCR-408-ID-801741782-ADNFCR
