New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art has seen over six million visitors annually for three years running, it recently announced.

These are the biggest visitor numbers since the venue first started keeping track of admission numbers over four decades ago.

In the fiscal year up to June 30th, the Metropolitan Museum was visited by 6.2 million guests from both the US and a total of 187 other countries around the world.

It comes after the year that the Met started opening all through the week for the for the first time - in the past it was closed every Monday.

The time doors open at the venue has also been changed, with it now opening at 10am.

The guest figures encompass visits to the museum's fifth Avenue NYC venue and upper Manhattan's The Cloisters - which is themed around the Middle Ages.

This attraction saw close to 350,000 visitors during the last fiscal year - 50 per cent up year-on-year.

According to Metropolitan CEO and director, Thomas P. Campbell, the third consecutive year to top six million visitors "clearly demonstrates the public’s ongoing excitement for the Museum’s collections, exhibitions, and programs."

He also said: "We are also tremendously pleased that The Cloisters celebrated unprecedented attendance over the past fiscal year, which coincided with its 75th anniversary year."

Some 729,800 visitors took in the Met's New European Paintings Galleries, 1250–1800 last year, with this space having been opened in late May 2013.

And overall, there were close to 206,000 school visitors to The Metropolitan Museum. Meanwhile, the venue's website saw over 26 million unique users.

Next month the Met is set to open The David H. Koch Plaza which will be a public area at the museum's front, including fountains.

New York City is also famously home to cultural venues like the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Guggenheim Museum, among many other theatres, museums and galleries.ADNFCR-408-ID-801743221-ADNFCR
