Solo cruises can be a good way to meet new friends

UK cruise-goers more likely to meet new people

A new poll has revealed that UK cruisers travelling alone are more likely to make an effort to meet new people than enjoy the time on their own.

That’s according to Cruise Critic, who suggests that two-thirds (72%) of UK cruisers will try to make friends when on-board.

UK editor of the cruise news provider, Adam Coulter, said the attitudes surrounding solo cruises are changing, with more people electing to go alone as a “lifestyle choice”, and cruise lines are therefore responding by offering better options for those going it alone.

“For anyone planning a solo cruise, simply considering a few basic points about your travel needs before the trip will help to ensure the best experience possible," he said.

Cruise Critic has suggested a few useful tips for cruise-goers to make the best choices about the type of trip they want to take.

For instance, the cruise guide recommends doing some research about the ship you’ll be travelling on before you leave. A big ship will offer more people to socialise with, but with such a vast amount of people, it might be quite intimidating. Small ship cruises perhaps offer more opportunities to socialise, thanks to open-seat dining, small excursions and games.

You should also find that some cruises specially cater for solo travellers, with gatherings organised for people to mingle.

The guide recommends dining with other cruisers, as this tends to be the best way to socialise. If you want to meet similar solo travellers, dine later to avoid the family rush. Having a traditional onboard dining experience could also place you on the same table at the same time for every meal, allowing you to establish friendships with familiar faces.

However, the poll also noted that 14% of travellers would rather keep themselves to themselves while on a cruise. Luckily, there are a number of places to retreat if you’re looking for a bit of time alone. Libraries, lounges and internet cafes could prove to be the perfect sanctuary, and solo cabins are also available.ADNFCR-408-ID-801747786-ADNFCR
