24 Sep 2014

The demand for cruises has increased by 77 per cent, according to new findings.

Research published by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), showed that the number of people travelling this way had grown from 12 million to 21.3 million.

Its figures showed that out of the 6.4 million living in Europe, 1.73 million cruise customers are from the UK and Ireland while 1.69 million are from Germany.

Commenting on the findings, Christine Duffy, president of the CLIA, said: “The cruise industry is truly global, bringing together a diverse mix of international passengers and crew to experience exciting itineraries, multiple destinations, and exceptional holiday vacation value on every continent.”

On average, consumers travelled for seven days on a cruise ship  with three to four port calls.

In terms of destination, Majorca and Ibiza are the most popular among Brits, according to separate findings from the travel association, Abta.ADNFCR-408-ID-801750268-ADNFCR
