Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal will be stepping into a multiverse as he makes his Broadway debut in Nick Payne’s Constellations.

Mr Gyllenhaal, who is best known for his roles in Brokeback Mountain, Donnie Darko and Love and Other Drugs, will be taking the role of Roland, a beekeeper. He will be starring opposite Luther actress Ruth Wilson, who will also be making her Broadway debut playing Marianne, a physicist.

The play focuses on Marianne and Roland living in a multiverse, in which, due to the differences in the parallel universes, the couple are sometimes living a peaceful life in love. Other times, however, they are living fractured lives.

Fans of Mr Gyllenhaal will be aware that this isn’t the first time the actor has worked with Nick Payne, having performed in his off-Broadway play If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet back in 2012. Interestingly enough, this was directed by Michael Longhurst, who will be teaming up with Mr Gyllenhaal and Mr Payne again for Constellations.

Constellations originally ran in London in 2012, receiving fantastic reviews when it starred Made in Dagenham’s Sally Hawkins and One Day’s Rafe Spall as the protagonists.

This exciting Broadway run, however, will see Mr Gyllenhaal and Ms Wilson take to the stage at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater in New York, where Constellations begins previews on 16 December, before opening its 13-week run on 13 January 2015.

Broadway clearly holds a special place to the Gyllenhaal family as Jake’s sister, The Dark Knight star Maggie, made her debut in one of the world’s most famous theatre districts last week. Starring opposite Ewan McGregor and Cynthia Nixon in Tom Stoppard’s comedy The Real Thing, Ms Gyllenhaal will be no doubt putting on a stellar performance in the production, which will be running until January 5th at the American Airlines Theater.ADNFCR-408-ID-801752697-ADNFCR
