Amsterdam Light Festival brightens up the Winter

Amsterdam Light Festival brightens up the Winter
5 Nov 2014

Amsterdam will once again be lit up as the annual Light Festival illuminates the city this winter for more than fifty days.

From November 27th right through until January 18th 2015, those visiting Amsterdam will experience the international festival’s third winter run as the historical city centre is transformed into an artistic canvas.

The artworks displayed are all designed and created by a variety of talented artists and architects who come from nine different countries, including New Zealand, France, Brasil and Chile, to name but a few. Each will be bringing a unique, cultural flair to the city.

One of the most exciting experiences of the festival is the Water Colors boat tour, which will take visitors past a variety of artworks from Angus Muir, Jacques Rival among others, alongside the city’s canals and the Amstel.

The walking tour, known as Illuminade, offers a route which winds through the Plantage areas of the city centre. This tour offers pieces of art which are perhaps slightly more experimental and mainly created by up and coming artists such as Hagar Elazari and Lisa van Noorden. However, those hoping to experience Illuminade must bear in mind that it is only open from December 11th until January 4th 2015.

In September, The Guardian actually named the Amsterdam Light Festival as one of the most beautiful in Europe, offering it praise due to the fact that it is the only one which offers you the experience from a boat. This gives the visitor the opportunity to see the lights in a completely different and unique way.

The Christmas Canal Parade is also a must-see as a plethora of boats are kitted out with glittering lights as they sail through the city’s canals, with a few choirs thrown in along the way just to really ensure you are getting into the festive spirit.

Of course, winter isn’t the most warm time of the year in Amsterdam and there are a variety of restaurants and bars selling delicious meals and warming drinks to keep you feel cosy along the way.ADNFCR-408-ID-801758432-ADNFCR
