Peru shows off its northern nature
09 March 2006

Peru is trying to encourage visitors by promoting its Amazon region.

In the north of the country in the Loreto region, travellers can find unspoilt dense vegetation surrounding the Amazon basin with a wide variety of wildlife, including anacondas, pink dolphins and manatees.

The capital of the region is Loreto and, being the main port on the Amazon, it always has an exciting hustle and bustle.

Much of the architecture dates from the late 19th century and has an Art Nouveau feel that makes the city especially unique

The best time to visit is in June when the festival of San Juan kicks off. A carnival atmosphere comes to the city and the air becomes full of music and the smell of local cooking.

Dishes to look out for include tacacho (baked banana) and juanes (rice pastries), but you should also try some of the potent aphrodisiacs blended from secret recipes of fruits, herbs and sugarcane alcohol.

Peru's famous lost city of Machu Picchu should, of course, also be visited along with the historical city of Cuzco.
