World spends £3.5 trillion on travel
10 March 2006

New research has found that global spending for travel and tourism now stands at £3.5 trillion.

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) figures show the world spent 5.7 per cent more on travel last year.

WTTC president Jean-Claude Baumgarten said: "We are witnessing the power, speed and vitality of travel and tourism and how they can bring economic opportunity and jobs to people and economies seeking sustainable development."

The research also uncovered where tourism is growing most in the world, and so the hottest new destinations to find.

At the head of the list was Montenegro, followed by China, India, Romania and Croatia.

Montenegro offers a great variety of activities, from lazing on the Adriatic beaches to exploring the rugged mountains.

The country is steeped in history, as many cultures have left their mark on this surprising small nation.
