Unconventional destinations on the rise
13 March 2006

An increasing number of travellers are exploring more countries away from the mainstream destination sites.

Although popular Mediterranean resorts such as the Costa del Sol and the Italian Riviera have long held sway with the sun-seeking masses, Eastern European and Balkan countries are gradually beginning to entice tourists to their shores.

According to the 2006 Tourism Satellite Accounting research from the World Travel and Tourism Council, Montenegro, Romania, Croatia and Albania are becoming increasingly popular with holiday-makers.

"Global tourism activity is setting new records globally but what is really amazing is how smaller, developing countries like Montenegro, Romaniaare using travel and tourism as catalysts for broader economic development," said Jean-Claude Baumgarten.

"They've come to appreciate the impact of international visitors and resident tourism and have made strategic decisions from the highest office to focus attention, resources and effort on the economic potential."

Further afield destinations such as India and China have also experienced growth in their tourism demand as a growing number of travellers seek to experience Asia and the Far East.
