Blackpool Airport unveils £2m facelift
13 March 2006

Rugby legend Bill Beaumont celebrated Blackpool Airport's £2 million facelift when he opened the refurbished terminal.

The former England captain said that with 14 new check-in desks, shops and an open-plan departure lounge, the 96-year old airport was now fit for his rugby stars.

He added that Blackpool's airport now offered serious competition to those in Liverpool and Manchester for low cost flights.

Paul Whelan, executive chairman of the airport's owners City Hopper said: "We want to offer safe, convenient and low-cost flying to millions of people and we now have a terminal which can offer that."

He also stated that he hoped the refurbished airport would now attract a million passengers this year and six million by 2010.

Bill Beaumont added that he would "rather fly out of a terminal ten minutes down the road than drive nearly two hours to be stuck in queues at one of the bigger airports".

Flights operate to a variety of destinations in the British Isles and the Continent, linking Blackpool's beaches with those of the Mediterranean through Ryan Air, Jet2 and Monarch Scheduled.

Even the airport's former owners welcomed the changes, Blackpool Council saying that refurbishment had shown that they had made "the right decision" in selling it.
