Melbourne set to rock with laughter
13 March 2006

Travellers visiting Australia during the Easter holidays can combine their sightseeing with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Along with the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Montreal's Just for Laugh's Festival, Melbourne's comedy-orientated month is one of the largest laugh-fests in the world.

Running from April 12th to May 7th, this year's festival is the latest in the city's 19-year history of comedy shows.

With more than 1,000 comedians performing in over 100 shows, the festival is sure to entertain both locals and tourists.

Shows will include searches for the world's next big comedians, a Gala evening of both local and overseas artists and a Great Debate showing a battle of comedy wits.

Set up by Barry Humphries, more commonly known to some as Dame Edna Everage, the festival also features special Barry awards, which are awarded to the most outstanding shows.

With the Commonwealth Games taking place in Melbourne in just a few days' time, more tourists are expected to turn their attention away from other Australian hotspots such as Sydney.

Boasting a reputation for excellent food and wine as well as a buzzing nightlife and numerous family attractions, this is perhaps deservedly so.
