Historical Easter festivities in Seville
14 March 2006

Religious tradition provides for a spiritual and cultural experience in Seville during the Easter period.

Thousands of people from all ages pour onto the narrow winding streets of the ancient city to take part in and witness the centuries-old Semana Santa, or Holy Week.

Taking place from April 9th to 16th, the festival is one of the most important celebrations in the city's history and sees the Cofradias (Brotherhoods) process in penitence through the city from their church to the Cathedral and back, dating from a seventeenth century decree.

In what is a huge event, hundreds of groups representing different districts of the town parade with images of Jesus and the Virgin Mary from noon everyday, with the parade culminating in a midnight cavalcade which continues into the early hours of the morning.

As well as the parade, the cathedral itself is worth a visit. As the third largest cathedral in the world, it is one of the last Spanish gothic cathedrals and also displays evidence of renaissance style and architecture.
