European tourists go west
16 March 2006
A new study has found that European travellers are opting for Western Europe over east.
In a similar poll last year by TripAdvisor the east was found to offer the most appealing destinations, but now the pendulum has swung back.
The poll found that 62 per cent of travellers were aiming to head to Europe on their holidays and 70 per cent said they would rather go west if cash was no problem.
Italy is without a doubt the top destination to head to with Rome and Venice being named as the top two destinations in Western Europe.
The east's top spot was the capital of the Czech Republic, Prague.
Michele Perry, TripAdvisor director of communications, said: "We are seeing a trend shift with travellers now favouring classic popular destinations such as Rome, Venice, Paris and London, while Eastern Europe was all the rage in 2005.
"With all of the incredible variety Europe has to offer, it was surprising that the top two cities according to travellers are both in Italy."
When it comes to food the top destination was Italy, with 54 per cent of the vote, followed by France, Spain and Greece.
Londoners were named as the friendliest and most helpful locals, just beating off Dubliners.
