Italy named top spot to walk
17 March 2006
Italy is the best country for a walking holiday, according to a new poll.
The variety of sights to see, including mountains, lakes, ancient cities and beautiful coastlines, gave Italy the top spot in the poll by Rambler's Holidays.
Second place went to Spain and third was Greece, with its islands offering a great selection of walks through varied landscapes of mountains, forests and coasts.
Fourth place went to France and walkers chose Portugal's unspoilt national parks as fifth favourite.
Heading beyond Europe the top ten also featured South Africa, the US and Morocco as places to ramble, get away from the beaten track, meet people and see sights that normally would not be open to normal holidaymakers.
Croatia's warm and sunny summers and Austria's alpine peaks and green valleys were also listed among the best destination to discover by walking.
