Forget George W in Washington
20 March 2006

For many Washington DC is the place to head to take in some of the US's most iconic sights, but there is much more that the nation's capital has to offer.

This spring there are a great variety of events and sights to enjoy in the 100-square-mile District of Columbia.

The music of America will be celebrated from March 20th to April 9th when the Kennedy Centre hosts its first ever country music festival with stars such as Kris Kristofferson, Loretta Lynn, Naomi Judd and Wynonna Judd all performing.

March 25th to April 8th sees the marvellous National Cherry Blossom Festival taking place.

The festival celebrates the gift of 30,000 cherry trees from the people of Japan to the people of Washington DC in 1912 with a series of cultural activities, culinary events and a Japanese street festival.

If you get homesick you can enjoy a little English culture with celebrations to mark Shakespeare's birthday on April 23rd, complete with Queen Elizabeth I herself in attendance, followed by free Shakespeare performances.

The Shakespeare Theatre Company between May 26 and June 4th is putting on a production of Pericles in the beautiful outdoor setting of the Carter Barron Amphitheatre.
