£760 a minute mini-break out of this world
22 March 2006

A Norfolk farmer is set to pay £114,000 for a holiday trip that will take him literally out of this world.

Richard Burr, of Aylsham, has signed up for a trip with Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic.

He said: "It's a boy's thing. When you grow up you either want to be a rock star, astronaut or a cowboy. It's the ultimate experience.

"People talk about what they wish they had done in their lives and opportunities they have let go past them. It's something that I have known in my heart that I have always wanted to do."

Mr Burr will join just nine other Britons who have signed up for the trip, which will launch him 62 miles into space on a voyage that will last just two and a half hours.

Launches are planned to start in 2008 and the first ever commercial spacecraft will take off from a base in Mexico.

Before heading into space Mr Burr will have to spend six days of training and medical preparation at the luxury resort near the launch site.

He will then be propelled at three times the speed of sound out of the planet's atmosphere.

Virgin Galactic hopes to send 500 people into space in its first year of action.
