New Durban airport to be built
24 March 2006
A Durban international airport delayed for thirty years has finally been given the go-ahead.
Construction of King Shaka International Airport will begin in the first quarter of 2008, a development costing R2 billion that should be finished by 2009.
Dube Tradeport, the company charged by KwaZuluNatal province with developing a proposed industrial zone, said it had successfully resolved a land dispute between the provincial government and South Africa's main aviation body, Airport Company of South Africa (ACSA).
Under the new arrangements ACSA has sold the land on which the airport will be built to KwaZuluNatal province, but will manage the airport for its first ten years.
'We have reached an exciting phase in the realisation of a dream of a world-class facility on the African continent,' Rohan Persad, chief executive of Dube Tradeport, commented.
'More importantly, this project is a catalyst for economic development and sustainable job creation in KwaZulu-Natal.'
South Africa and the other host nations of the 2010 football World Cup have planned joint efforts to improve the region's transport and infrastructure, in an attempt to boost tourism to the area in the long term.
King Shaka International Airport will be a key part of that development, provided that no further problems occur during its construction - previous mooted completion dates have included 1981, 1988 and 2006.
