Heathrow Terminal 2 to close
28 March 2006

BAA has announced that Heathrow Terminal 2 is to shut.

The terminal, which is the airport's oldest and was originally known as the Europa Building when it opened in 1955, will close when Terminal 5 opens its doors in March 2008.

Terminal 2 currently conveys passengers on short European flights but the majority of its business will be transferred to the new terminal once it is completed, meaning an anticipated reduction in passenger numbers to under 1.5 million a year from its current rate of nine million.

'A decision has been made today to close the facility after all of the airline relocations have taken place,' the company said.

'While this decision to close Terminal 2 is made with a mixture of sadness and nostalgia, it must be remembered that Terminal 2 is Heathrow's first and oldest terminal.'

BAA is also looking to receive planning permission for its new £1.5 billion Heathrow East project by the end of the year, which is estimated will be able to handle 30 million travellers per year.
