UK air passenger numbers up
28 March 2006

New figures from airports operator BAA show that passenger numbers have increased over the past year.

The company's latest trading update shows that for the 11 months to the end of February this year BAA's seven UK airports handled a total of 133.2 million passengers.

BAA, which owns London Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports, admitted that last year's terrorist attacks on the capital had undermined the country's tourist industry.

However, it is predicting that passenger numbers at its UK airports would increase by two per cent for the full year; whilst 2006 could see a 3.3 to 3.5 per cent rise.

The figures also revealed that retail operations at its UK airports are continuing to expand and are expected to report a two per cent increase in growth following a range of cost-saving initiatives.

Mike Clasper, BAA chief executive, said: 'The group is on track to deliver trading performance for the year in line with our expectations, a good result given the impact of a softer UK economy and increased security requirements.'
