Avalanche alert
30 March 2006
This year has seen a higher than normal number of avalanches, skiers heading to the pistes for some end of season action are being warned.
The increased avalanche activity is said to be down to temperature fluctuations throughout the season.
Snowboarders and skiers heading off-piste on fresh snow that has not stabilised are said to be exacerbating the problem.
Research from American Express highlights the need for travel insurance as 15 per cent of skiers lose three days of their holiday due to injury.
However, a fifth of skiers and snowboarders take no insurance.
Joanne Field, of American Express, which carried out the research, warned: 'It is vital to compare cover when buying winter sports travel insurance, as policies can vary enormously.
'Not all insurers offer off-piste cover as standard or cover search and rescue costs, which could be incurred as a result of an avalanche.'
