Airport for sale
04 April 2006
Exeter International Airport is to be put up for sale.
Devon County Council has announced it is to sell its majority stake in the airport and, despite the fact the council says it expects big money interest, it claims its main objective is to secure its long-term success.
Council leader Brian Greenslade said: "Our paramount objective is ensuring the continuing success of Exeter International Airport and securing its position as a driving force in the Devon economy.
"We have a duty on behalf of the tax-payers to secure the best value for this major public asset, but best value is more than just money; it is also importantly about whats best for the airport, the local economy and our customers."
It is claimed that Exeter International is the UK's fastest growing airport with passenger numbers up 36 per cent in 2005 to 843,461.
The council will continue its investment in the airport with £2.7 million improvements to the terminal concourse and a £1.5 million project to upgrade airside baggage handling facilities and add further aircraft stands.
A previous attempt to sell the airport failed after a Competition Commission investigation.
