Portugal to open museum dedicated to 20th century art
07 April 2006

Portugal is set to build a museum that will house works of art by the profession's leading 20th century exponents.

Works by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol will be displayed at the Belem Cultural Centre in Lisbon following a deal between Portugal's government and mining tycoon Joe Berardo.

Mr Berardo had threatened that his collection, which also contains works by Jeff Koons, Francis Bacon and Joan Miro and is scattered around galleries throughout Portugal, would go to France, Italy or the US if a deal could not be reached.

'If we don't plant seeds to get great things, we won't even get little things. I'd like to make this one of the great museums of the world,' Mr Berardo said, according to the Reuters news agency.

The government, which will have first option at buying the pieces at the end of the deal's ten-year tenure, claims the collection will feature pieces from all the main movements of the period.

The museum, which is due to open at the end of the year, will also house many pieces of interest from before the last century, including porcelain, coins and books.
