Weekend visitors to Scotland double
07 April 2006
The number of visitors during this year's Historic Scotland Free Weekend doubled to over 100,000.
On 1 and 2 April, 103,000 people visited the 74 Historic Scotland properties that opened their doors for free, up from 46,000 the year before.
Fiona Docherty, Historic Scotland head of visitor services, said: 'The fact that visitor numbers for the Free Weekend more than doubled is quite fantastic.
'People in every part of the country took the opportunity to enjoy the heritage at the heart of their communities without paying a penny to get in.'
With many people impressed by the history they found in Scotland, around 3,500 people joined Historic Scotland.
The most popular property visited during the weekend was Edinburgh Castle, welcoming over 37,000 people to its many attractions including St Margaret's Chapel - Edinburgh's oldest building that dates from to the tenth century.
Other popular attractions included Linlithgow Palace - birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots, and home to all the Stewart kings of Scotland - and Stirling Castle, near the site of William Wallace's victory over the English in 1297.
