Dubai proposes law to protect tourists
11 April 2006

Police in Dubai are calling for a law to hit criminals that target tourists.

Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, commander-in-chief of Dubai Police, speaking at an international conference on tourism, highlighted the importance of tourism to local economies and how it was important that travellers felt secure.

He said: 'Tourism is a key factor in the economy of the Arab world and Dubai is one of the most attractive tourist destinations.'

However, it was noted that tourists are not generally targeted by criminals in Dubai.

The Khaleej Times reports that speakers at the conference also highlighted the fact that hotels contributed to nine per cent of Dubai's economy and visitor numbers were set to treble over the next decade to 15 million a year.

The popularity of Dubai has grown recently with the large numbers of celebrities that have headed to the Middle Eastern state. Footballers Teddy Sheringham, Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney have all headed to the emirate along with stars Victoria Beckham and Charlotte Church.
