North American Airlines to fly to West Africa
13 April 2006
North American Airlines is to start flights from Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) to two destinations in West Africa.
Services to Banjul in Gambia and Accra in Ghana will start from 4 June.
The flight will go directly to Banjul and then continue to Accra.
North American already flies between New York's John F Kennedy International Airport and Accra, as the only US airline with scheduled services to Africa.
Jeff MacKinney, president of North American's owners World Air Holdings, said: 'There is significant demand in the Baltimore/Washington DC area for direct flights to Africa, and North American's Boeing 767-300ER service will greatly reduce flying time between BWI and the cities of Banjul and Accra in West Africa.'
The Gambian capital Banjul was founded by the British in 1816 and today Islamic and European architecture can be found throughout the city.
Accra, meanwhile, was originally established as a trading post in the 15th century. The capital city has varied past can be seen through its British, Danish, Portuguese and Dutch districts.
