Frequent flying in Manchester gets faster
13 April 2006
Frequent fliers heading out of Manchester Airport will be travelling faster with the installation of new technology.
The Iris Recognition Immigration System (Iris) will now enable registered passengers to enter the UK without queuing to see an immigration officer at passport control.
Travellers will only have to approach an automatic barrier and look into a camera that should recognise them and allow them to pass.
Speaking at the launch, Home Office minister Andy Burnham said: 'For the first time frequent travellers and non-EU citizens will be able to enter the country via Manchester Airport quickly and securely.'
The technology works by photographing a person's unique iris patterns and storing the data in a database with passport details.
Manchester is the second airport in the UK to take up Iris, after Heathrow's Terminal 1 started using the technology last month, following a successful introduction in Terminals 2 and 4 during June last year.
