Passenger boost for UK airports

Passenger traffic at UK airports rose last year, particularly at the country's regional airports, according to a recent report.
The Civil Aviation Authority's statistics show that the UK's airports handled 229 million passengers in total over 2005, up six per cent on the year before.
It was the regional airports that really showed signs of improvement last year, with an increase of nine per cent, taking the number of passengers handled up to 95 million, with a 32 per cent increase in traffic at Liverpool and a 13 per cent rise at Bristol.
London's five airports experienced a more modest rise of four per cent over 2005, taking total traffic to 134 million passengers for the year, with Luton and Gatwick showing the best increases of 1.6 million and 1.3 million respectively.
These figures indicate a remarkable rise in the UK's air traffic over the past decade, particularly within the country's regional airports, which have seen passenger numbers rise from 47 million in 1995 to 95 million in 2005.
During this same period, London's airports have seen a slightly slower, but nonetheless still impressive growth in passenger traffic, from 83 million in 1995 to 134 million in 2005.
