New runway for Dublin Airport
19 April 2006
Dublin Airport is set to get a new runway in a bid to cope with increased usage during the next decade.
The 1.6 km strip was given the go ahead by Fingal County Council last week despite the protests of some 800 local residents.
The campaign group Uproar claims that the new runway would send air traffic over the nearby town of Portmarnock and that a new airport should be built elsewhere in the capital or in the outlying counties.
It is thought that the runway will become operational within the next six to seven years to ensure that the increasing demands on the airport can be met.
However an airport spokesperson said: 'It is expected that the new runway will not be brought into operation until usage of the current runway system is maximised.'
Dublin Airport Authority expects the airport to handle over 30 million passengers a year by 2016.
